Paul’s Guide to Montreal- Part 1- Arriving

I’m currently visiting Montreal, Quebec, Canada, for the first time for the 2011 ISMRM (International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine) conference. Montreal is a great city, so I decided to make a guide based on my experiences. It’ll be a mix of a travel log and guide. This part covers getting to Montreal.
I flew into Montreal on Sunday, May 8th, on Air Canada. Montreal’s International terminal is quite large. It didn’t help that the gate we arrived at was all the way at the end of the terminal. After about 10 minutes of walking, I finally went through customs, and then claimed my baggage.

Android App of the Week: Drisk

I love Android and everything related to Android. So I’ve decided to start an Android section for my blog. Along with the Android section, I’m starting App of the Week, where I post my favorite app of that week.

The first App of the Week is Drisk! Drisk is the classic game of Risk for Android. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve played this when I’m bored in a lecture, on the bus, etc. Screenshots below.

Frite Alors! – Montreal, QC

Since I’m in Montreal for the first time, I thought I should explore the city. More on that in a later post, but for dinner today, I decided to stop by Frite Alors! As you can see by the picture below (and the name), the restaurant specializes in french fries.
They apparently have several locations in Montreal. The one I stopped by was on Rue Saint-Denis in Quartier Latin (Latin Quarter) near UQAM (Université du Québec à Montréal). Continue reading

Yasmin & Bo Burnham

I recently discovered this great music video by Yasmin, for her single On My Own. Not only are the instrumentals great, but the lyrics are really good. Not to mention that the video is shot beautifully.

Then there’s this amazing remix on Sound Cloud:

Groupon, Sony, Isuzu, & Other Random Videos

My latest roundup of random videos!

Groupon’s unsubscribe page video (don’t worry, this won’t actually unsubscribe you):

I remember seeing this Sony Bravia video years ago. It’s just so amazingly shot, and the music really adds to the emotion of the video:

Pete Miller’s Seafood & Prime Steak

Pete Miller’s Seafood & Prime Steak
1557 Sherman Ave.
Evanston, IL 60201

I’ve heard a lot about Pete Miller’s in my time in Evanston, but I’ve never had the chance to go, not to mention the money. Luckily, Groupon had a $25 for $50 deal for Pete Miller’s recently, and I jumped at the opportunity.

Today I finally visited for an early Easter dinner with family. Since it’s supposed to be well known for its steak, I figured I should order one. I tend to only order filet mignon when eating steak, but the server recommended the Kansas City steak, which is a New York cut with the bone, cooked with peppercorn and served with a cognac reduction sauce. I ordered it medium rare. Low res cell phone picture below:

Some funny photos & other miscellaneous stuff

I recently found this awesome site called Future Timeline: http://www.futuretimeline.net. Here’s the site’s description:

Welcome to the future! Here you will find a speculative timeline of future history. Part fact and part fiction, the timeline is based on detailed research that includes analysis of current trends, projected long-term environmental changes, known advances in computing such as Moore’s Law, the latest scientific advances, and the evolving geopolitical landscape. Where possible, references have been provided to support the predictions. FutureTimeline.net is intended to be an ongoing, collaborative project that is open for discussion – we welcome ideas from scientists, futurists, inventors, writers and anyone else interested in the future of our world.

Then there’s this homework problem for some nuclear engineering course at UCD: http://nuclear.ucdavis.edu/~tgutierr/files/sml2.pdf. I look at this and my gloss over. Can’t say that I understand much of it.

Lastly, here’s a few photos from friends and the web that I’ve found funny recently:

Aston Martin’s new Virage

Just a quick post to mention Aston Martin’s new car, the Virage. I saw it mentioned on Top Gear (UK version [the best version]), and I decided to check it out. Aston Martin only announced it last month (it’s a revival of an older model, though), and it’s quite a beautiful car. The Virage will have a 6.0-liter V12 engine, and a top speed is 186mph, with 0-62mph acceleration in 4.6 seconds. If only I could afford it.

Slideshow & Gallery of some random pictures I found of it from around the internet.

Addicting Games

Recently I’ve found two very addicting games.

The first is a tycoon-style game called Corporation Inc. The goal: build up a corporation from the ground up. It was quite fun, although it got a little monotonous in the end when it was just really waiting around. Check it out for yourself: http://www.addictinggames.com/corporation-inc-game.html.
I only built up the 18th floor, but still made over a billion dollars in 45 days. Not a bad profit at all. If only it were the real world.

The second game I’ve found doesn’t exactly have a name. It’s fun nevertheless: http://wonderfl.net/c/tNGi/fullscreen?lol. Think of it like brick breaker, but with chain reactions. Can you sustain the chain reaction long enough to clear the screen?

Music: Holiday, Love is Noise, & More

So it’s been a while. Even though I wanted to post every week, that hasn’t worked out. We’ll see what happens in the future.

Anyway, here’s some music I’ve discovered and re-discovered these past few weeks:

Dizzee Rascal’s Holiday

Although it was release in 2009 (and I’ve probably heard it before), I heard it again in London’s NYE fireworks display finale. My favority part of the song is the end, around 3:10 in the video below:

Although I also like the instrumental version of the song:
