It’s quite an extensive tutorial that I have yet to try myself (my previous attempts have been complete failures). As soon as I get a chance, I’ll give it another shot and post results here.

As an avid fan of sci-fi, I’ve seen plenty of shows that speculate about lifeforms made of something other than carbon. Usually they take the form of silicon-based lifeforms. Although I’m not a chemist or biologist, from what I’ve learned from college chemistry (both inorganic and organic) and biology, there’s no scientific reason that lifeforms made of something other than carbon can’t exist.
Imagine my surprise when I find out that scientists from the University of Glasgow have created “cell-like bubbles” composed of tungsten, oxygen, and phosphorous. As DVICE puts it,
These bubbles can self-assemble, and they exhibit many of the same properties that allow biological cells to do what they do, including an internal structure and a selectively porous outer membrane that can let other molecules pass through. It may even be possible to set the metallic cells up to perform photosynthesis.
It’s amazing what we’re doing with science these days. Apparently the next step is to give these cells DNA-like materials, which may give them the ability to replicate and evolve. This would surely prove that non-corbon lifeforms can exist, and maybe do exist somewhere out in our huge universe.

I love Yanko Design because it showcases some amazing concept art, and not just for gadgets. This time around they’re showing off a design for an Android powered Wacom sketching tablet. I’ve always wanted a Wacom tablet just because it’s so cool, but I’m not much of an artist, so I don’t really need one. I also really want an Android tablet (a Transformer Prime, preferabbly), but one thing has always bothered me about Android tablets: they’re not exactly designed for sketching or drawing, particularly because they lack a pressure sensitive interface. I thought it was about time to post something about my phone itself, for a change. As I’ve mentioned before, my current phone is an HTC Sensation 4G from T-Mobile. When I first got the phone, it was very laggy. HTC Sense UI is a horrible ROM for Android. It took me a while to finally root and change the ROM, since I waited until a permanent root method became available. What I chose was something that I had never tried on Android before: MIUI. I love MIUI. The lag is gone, and I have a blazing fast and functional phone. Continue reading
When Google Currents first came out, I was really excited. I had never read news a lot on my phone, but I thought Currents would change that. In a way, it did. I do read more news on my phone now, but I’ve abandoned Currents for Pulse. Here’s why.
1. Updating Articles
I completely understand that it takes time to update all the articles from all the sources that I’ve added to Currents, but why does Currents update on its own? I know that Android kills off background tasks to save memory, but I wouldn’t mind if Currents kept a small task that checked every 30 minutes or so for new articles. When I open currents, it doesn’t even update on its own anyway! I always need to hit the refresh button. Then I put away my phone and come back 10 minutes later to see what’s new. It’s ridiculous. Pulse at least keeps posts updated for you. Continue reading
In early November I had a chance to attend a talk by Vincent Laforet at the Lincoln Park Apple store about Motion in Photography and Cinematography. It was a great talk by Vincent, and afterward we all headed across the street to a restaurant called Burger Bar (http://burgerbarchicago.com).
As the name suggests, the restaurant’s primary menu item is burgers. You can get anything from a simple cheeseburger to a custom creation. If you’re feeling adventurous, but not too creative, you can try some of their signature burgers. Check out their full menu here.
As it was my first time, but still feeling adventurous (and egged on by everyone else there), I went for the elk burger with andouille sausage, pepper-onion relish, smoked gouda, and chili aioli. And instead of regular fries, I opted for the sweet potato fries. What arrived looked like quite a mess:
After biting into it, though, all I could think was, “DELICIOUS!” It was actually similar to the caribou burger from Frite Alors! in Montreal (blog post here), but with a little extra kick from the chili aioli. And the sweet potato fries had the perfect amount of crunch.
Overall, Burger Bar has a great atmosphere (a bar area and a more traditional dining area), good service, and amazing burgers (I hear their milk shakes are fantastic as well). Next time I’m in Lincoln Park for dinner, I’ll definitely be stopping by.
I’m still trying to catch up on posts from my 3 day haitus. I’ll be posting as quickly as I can, but I don’t want to post things just for the sake of posting. I’ll make sure to put out some quality posts, but those do take some time. More posts will come later today. Hopefully I’ll be back on schedule by the end of the day.
